I came across these this morning and thought them worth sharing:
Every man must do two things alone: he must do his own believing and his own dying.
Peace if possible, truth at all costs.
The fewer the words, the better the prayer.
How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'.
Truth at all costs? Should you tell the truth to someone who is living happily under a delusion or in ignorance when that truth will hurt them deeply (a theme explored in "Those Faraday Girls"- ask Julie!!)?
ReplyDeleteI had reason the other day to look up my Large Catechism (some doorknockers who had an "interesting" take on the Lord's prayer). Is there a more recent translation that Freidemann Hebarts of 1983? It's OK but the language is a little stilted.Kepp up the good work!
Certainly Luther wasn't infallible. Truth certainly can hurt. I think the truth Luther was referring to was the truth of the Gospel.
ReplyDeleteThere are more recent translations of the Large Catechism. I have two recent editions of the Book of Concord which includes updated versions (one put out by Fortress Press, translated by Kolb/Wengert, dated 2000 - this is the source of the quote. Another is by Concordia Publishing House called 'Concordia' dated 2006). A search on Google might reveal more.
